Korean DMZ Ecology Diomrama
지뢰, 철조망, 화공작전이 없었다면 DMZ 내 서식종들은 각기 다른 특성을 가지며 현재와는 다르게 존재했을 것이다. 즉, 폭력의 화살은 현재의 DMZ 종들을 파괴하는 것이 아니라 그들의 존재를 살리는 역할을 한다. 분단의 아픔을 극복한 존재로 상징되는 DMZ의 서식종들은 사실 그 분단의 아픔 덕분에 정착하고 있는 존재들, 즉 현재의 삶을 안정적으로 유지하기 위해서는 그러한 위협들이 필요한 존재들이다.
자르고 용접하고 구부려 만든 날카로운 철조망 구조물에 생명의 숨을 불어넣듯 유리를 불어넣었다. 철조망 사이로 유리는 팽창하여 폭력성에 적응하고 뒤엉킨 공간을 창조한다. 만약 화병으로부터 철조망을 분리한다면 유리와 그 안의 생태계는 연쇄적으로 붕괴할 것이다. 유리와 철조망의 불가분한 관계성은 현 상태를 지속하기 위해 폭력성을 필요로 하고 그것에 의존하는 DMZ 생태계를 대변한다.

Had there been no landmines, barbed wire, or chemical warfare, the species in the DMZ would have evolved differently. The violence of division didn’t simply destroy these species—it shaped and sustained their existence. Far from being victims, these species thrive because of the division, relying on the very threats that once endangered them.
I breathed life into sharp barbed wire structures—cut, welded, and bent—by blowing glass into their gaps. The glass expands, adapting to the violence, creating an entangled space. If the barbed wire were removed, the glass and its ecosystem would collapse. This inseparable bond between glass and wire reflects the DMZ ecosystem, which relies on violence to endure.
